Venus Von Mock Discusses Common Questions & Misconceptions About Clinical Hypnotherapy
“The Cave you Fear, Holds the Treasure you Seek.”
– Joseph Campbell
Joseph Campbell said it well. Often making changes can feel scary. We are can afraid of the unknown, however… to achieve our dreams we often have to take an unfamiliar path… stepping out in faith. Making a choice to change is EMPOWERING!
About the Photo: Derinkuyu, Turkey is one of the underground cities of Cappadocia, Turkey. The tunnels were excavated as early as Hittite times. It is fascinating to imagine how people lived in these underground cities. To walk through the caves and tunnels which seem to go on and on, deep underground, one can feel the childlike wonder of exploration rise up inside! It is like a metaphor for exploring one-self by going within. Sometimes experiencing wonder and sometimes facing our own fears…
COMMON QUESTIONS
Can Anyone Be Hypnotized?
Everyone can be hypnotized except:
Psychotics- No Reality to work with
Children < 7 Yrs. – No Attention Span, Inability To Concentrate
IQ < 70
Paranoid – Distrust/Suspicion
Fear
Refusal – Just Won’t Allow
Who Does It Help?
Hypnotherapy helps individuals who desire to make changes in their life. Being receptive to change is key to getting the most benefit from this kind of therapy.
Willingness is the path for optimum results in Hypnotherapy.
Hypnotherapy is a path to optimism.
For instance, if an individual doesn’t want to quit smoking, but their spouse sends them to be hypnotized because they want them to quit, it is unlikely that the individual will achieve the intended result. However, if the individual is sick and tired of their habit and want to quit, he/she is a perfect candidate for success, because they are ready to be done with the habit and they are choosing to quit. Another scenario… if an individual enjoys smoking, but wants to break the habit, this can be remedied by discovering the source of pleasure for cigarettes in the subconscious mind, in order to achieve the desired result.
What if I can’t be hypnotized?
A number of things can prevent normal healthy people from reaching deep levels of hypnosis, such as: fears of hypnosis, fear of losing control, other fears, a busy mind, refusal or resistance. However, these obstacles can be overcome.
Choose a hypnotherapist, whom you feel comfortable working with and trust. Professional hypnotherapy sessions are confidential and non judgmental. Choose a hypnotherapist, who listens and has a genuine interest to help you reach your goals. Keep in mind that any Therapist who take up your session-time talking about them selves or put words in your mouth, are not demonstrating good listening skills or respect for your interests and concerns. When you feel comfortable and have report with your Hypnotherapist, you will allow yourself to reach deeper levels of consciousness, because you know that your hypnotherapist is there to help you; thus, gain greater benefits. What is Hypnotherapy?

What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a natural brain wave state. Hypnosis Demystified
How do you know you are hypnotized? What does it feel like?
Clients feel deeply relaxed, however not “zonked out” or unconscious; they are actually participating in their session and speaking with the hypnotherapist while in hypnosis. They report physical sensations of feeling very light or very heavy. Their motor skills are often slowed while in the deeply relaxed state. When clients emerge from hypnosis, they often experience the perception of time has lagged and they have been in hypnosis for longer than they realize. At the conclusion of their session, individuals experience feelings of freeness, lightness, and relaxed like they have been on vacation.
What if I don’t have anything wrong with me; how can hypnotherapy benefit me?
I say, lucky you! Hypnotherapy is not just for problems, it can also be used to enhance areas of our lives, such as: personal growth, improved relationships, compassion, forgiveness of others (living or dead), release trauma energy of painful or hurtful past events, self discovery, past life regression, etc.
What is your Divine Design?
What is it that you are to do that no one else can do?
What is it about your makeup that makes you unique in purpose?
Most of us want to improve some area of our lives. Things that cause irritation or “push our buttons” are often indicators of areas we can improve to reduce stress in our lives. We cannot change others, but we can change our selves – the way we respond to others.

How Many Sessions Will It Take?
Some clients have dramatic results the first session while others require multiple sessions. There are many variables involved in hypnotherapy sessions. Everyone’s experience is unique to them and everyone’s response to hypnotherapy is different.
Some determining factors:
The clients’ goals
Some clients have specific goals while others have broader aspirations. Clients govern their own process.
Multiple issues or one issue
Some clients come with a laundry list of problems. One problem begets another problem; this is true, but the mind can only process so much in each session. Complex and deeply engrained issues may require incremental advancements to achieve the desired results.
Length of time of the problem
I have found that longstanding problems usually take multiple sessions; whereas, recently developed challenges, have greater chance of quick resolution. For example, something that has gone on in someone’s life for 30 years has had time to become well established, reinforced and spread over multiple layers of consciousness. However, if multiple expressions of one problem are the case, this can be an exception to the usual.
Ready to give up the behaviour or habit
Individuals who are ready and willing to let go of habits and behaviors, which no longer serve them, will generally take full advantage of the opportunity to make changes. They respond remarkably well to hypnotherapy and often resolve their issues with fewer sessions.
“Who wouldn’t want to let go of bad habits and behaviors!?”
Some of our habits become our operating system and serve us in some way unbeknownst to us. They can become part of our identity, such as: I’m ADHD, I’m a cancer survivor, I’m a child of alcoholic parents, I was abused, I was abandoned, etc. They range from emotional to physical heavy baggage we carry. These truly are very real and serious problems, however, when they become a part of our identity, they can rule our lives. Sometimes we may even use them as excuses for our bad behavior, to get out of doing things, and/or reject responsibility for our actions. We become so reliant on our crutch that we are reluctant to let go of this identity; because if we do, we won’t have excuses and we will be accountable for our actions. Sometimes we may be afraid that people will leave us, if we become self-reliant. It can simply become a fear of the unknown because we have been accustomed to our way of life. These thoughts can be disorienting and frightening. Scenarios, such as these may require therapy in digestible steps towards freeing ourselves from our false identities.
How deeply hypnotized an individual becomes
A hypnotherapist works in the Alpha and Theta brain wave states. Most of our everyday life we are operating in the Beta brain wave state. Generally, it is more advantageous to reach deeper levels of consciousness. If an individual is fearful of hypnosis, or other reasons that prevent them from experiencing deep hypnosis, they may have limited initial success. Sometimes it takes a few sessions to become comfortable, and mentally adapt to deeper states of hypnosis; however with each time it becomes easier and faster to reach deeper levels of consciousness. As more proficiency is gained, we can take advantage of hypnotherapy for optimum results.
Hypnotherapy is a Path to Releasing Deep-seated Fears & Anxieties
Previous Experience with Hypnosis
Some individuals have a natural ability to go into altered states of consciousness very easily; therefore experience is not a prerequisite to having a great effective first session. However, most clients find themselves able to reach deeper levels of hypnosis faster, once they have experienced it. When clients reach optimum levels of consciousness, they are highly receptive to the process and have an expectation for positive results. Less time spent deepening hypnosis, means more time can be used to resolve issues and implement positive suggestions… which translates as fewer sessions.
Expectation plays a key role
When we expect to get results, we get them, because our subconscious mind supports our beliefs. It is were we put our focus, what we expect, that brings results. Do we want our self-fulfilling prophecies to bring positive or negative expectations? If we expect negative results or believe nothing can help us, this will be our experience until we change our internal beliefs to allow change to take place. Discovering this paradigm or belief of limitation requires deeper exploration of our subconscious mind.
We Are Complex Multi-Dimensional Beings
Multiple Sources, Multiple Layers
Many clients have multiple sources to their problems, and/or problems spread over multiple layers of consciousness. This results from constant subconscious reinforcement of personal beliefs connected to the problems. Most of us love “to be right”, and our subconscious mind is all too willing to support our belief systems. Our perception of events and situations constantly reinforce and strengthen existing programs in the Subconscious mind. Over time they can become multifaceted and layered.
Nesting and Layering of Foreign Energies – a very heavy and important topic
It is common for individuals have foreign energies attached to them. Foreign Energies cause a multitude of negative impacts, mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually. They take on a parasitic-like existence, living off their host’s energy. They drain energy, block the vital life force energy to cell communities of their body and deposit negative programs in the subconscious mind. Once Foreign Energies are present, they can attract more like themselves, thereby layering or nesting can occur. Their presence can be very damaging.
You may say, “that is a bunch of hooey!” to put it politely. For many, this is an odd concept to accept, but it is a consistent theme in client sessions of many therapists’ practices, regardless of culture, race, religion, education or upbringing. Foreign Energy effects can range from a distracting nuisance to outright destructiveness, depending on the type. They also often obstruct the client’s therapy, however once discovered, they can be removed through Foreign Energy and Spirit Releasement Therapies. More about Therapies and Foreign Energies How the Subconscious Mind works?
In many ancient cultures getting rid of foreign energies was the basis for healing the sick (still going on today around the world). In our modern, scientifically minded societies we may view this as superstition and ignorance. This is similar to our progression to allopathic medicine practices and away from natural remedies. Although allopathic medicine’s value should not be dismissed, the use of manmade drugs can have negative side effects. This realization has brought about a renewed interest towards holistic medicine such as homeopathy and herbal remedies. Not only are these substances of a natural source chemically, but also have natural beneficial frequencies. Foreign Energies also have frequencies–discordant frequencies that disrupt our body’s natural frequency of health. Left unaddressed they often cause dis-ease in the mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual bodies. It is one more level of holistic health to consider. MYTHS & OTHER MISCONCEPTIONS
Can you tell me my future?
Some people confuse Hypnotherapy with Tarot reading and Astrology. They are not related. Hypnosis Demystified
It is a sign of weakness if you can be hypnotized.
Sometimes when I explain what I do, I hear “You can’t hypnotize me!”
Many people associate the notion that if you can be hypnotized, you must be weak or not very bright. On the contrary, highly intelligent, strong-minded people can and are successfully hypnotized. It isn’t a battle of wills; all hypnosis is self-hypnosis, which means individuals are in control of their own experience. Smart motivated individuals recognize the value of harnessing their own internal mental power and potential.
It is a well-known fact that military personnel are trained for mental strength in extreme situations. Individuals with highly disciplined careers, such as military personnel, generally are able to achieve very deep levels of hypnosis.
Individuals with repetitious occupations and athletes find hypnosis to be natural because they are conditioned to performing their jobs “in the zone”, a state of hypnosis, and therefore generally have great success.
The bottom line… If a person resists, fears or refuses to allow themselves to be hypnotized, they will not be. Usually if resistance is there, it is because they fear giving up control or of being controlled, that creates the resistance. Again, all hypnosis is self-hypnosis… that means, you are in control of your own experience.
So let go and allow yourself to experience a journey of self-discovery and for a better, happier, healthier version of you. Fear keeps us in our comfort zone, limits our growth and leads to stagnation. Hypnotherapy can break the chains of fear and help you to harness your own potential’s power.
In Hypnosis you give up control
In hypnosis the Subconscious mind is receptive to suggestion. What does that mean?!! We might ask ourselves, “Does that mean that anything can be planted in my mind? Like brainwashing? Can I be made to do things like… cluck like a chicken? Or will I tell all my secrets?
Relax!!! Calm down… and breathe… Now doesn’t that feel better?
My answer is… no, no, no, and no!
All Hypnosis is Self-Hypnosis.
Because all hypnosis is self-hypnosis, we cannot be coerced to do anything against our own will or moral judgment or integrity. In hypnosis we are far more aware and perceptive; because of this, our subconscious mind can detect deception, trickery, or ill-intentioned deliberations far more easily than our conscious (everyday thinking) mind. That is why a hypnotist or hypnotherapist cannot make us do anything against our will. Whew!
In a hypnotherapy session, our subconscious mind accepts only those concepts that are applicable and is willing to receive. If it sees the suggestion as undesirable, unbeneficial, or inappropriate, it will reject it. If it deems a suggestion as a desirable beneficial suggestion, it will accept it. It is a passive process and doesn’t involve brainwashing.
A hypnotist cannot make anyone cluck like a chicken… unless they want to or are willing to do so. Stage hypnotists usually start with many people on stage and then narrow it down to a few highly suggestible participants, whom are willing to let go of inhibitions and have fun with the experience. If you wish your 5 minutes of fame to be that of a chicken, have some fun and go for it!
Individuals are in full control of your own experience, because all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. That also means that you won’t give away any secrets that you don’t want to share. So you can relax, because you won’t be tricked into accidentally telling your hypnotherapist where you hid all your millions of dollars. Whew again!
Do you use a watch to hypnotize people?
Would you like me to?… This question always makes me smile. Eye fixation is a great way to induce hypnosis, however, I do not use a watch to hypnotize my clients. Another eye fixation example is a Buddhist meditation practice, focusing on a flame.
What if I get stuck in hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a natural state of being. An individual cannot get “stuck” in hypnosis. This state of hypnosis needs to be constantly reinforced to maintain. The hypnotized individual is given a stimulus to follow. For instance, a person may be told that the sound of the drill at the dentist office makes them more relaxed. As long as the drill is making sound, the person is remaining in hypnosis and feeling calm. In the case of a hypnotherapy office session, the client is listening to the voice of the hypnotherapist. As long as the therapist is speaking and interaction is occurring, the client remains in hypnosis. Should something happen, like the therapist has a heart attack (God forbid), the client would either come out of the altered state or fall asleep and have a nice nap. Hypnosis is a natural organic brain wave state and the frequency is naturally fluctuating up and down. So you can put that concern to rest!
